About

In my non-ceramics life, I am a writer, editor, poet, textile artist, and gardener, among other things. I create to enter my unique flow state, where I’m drawn out of my head and into my heart. As a 17-year-old college student, I fell in love with clay work. Roughly fifteen years later, I bought my first wheel and small kiln. Now, almost forty years after that first pottery class, I’ve found my match in hand-building. I love embossed clay; yet the standard in wheel-throw pots is symmetry, and I was constantly altering the symmetry of thrown pots when embossing them. When I learned about hand-building and began experimenting, the process appealed to my sensibilities. I appreciate how the hand is so visible, and how artists’ idiosyncrasies are inherent in this form. My love of folk art was sparked young, by a great aunt with a stunning folk art collection that even featured an original Diego Rivera!
